Judy Bales has exhibited her fiber and
mixed media works throughout the country for over 15 years in many
national as well as international juried and invitational
exhibitions. In 200l her work was selected for FIBERART
INTERNATIONAL 2001, International Biennial Exhibition of
Contemporary Fiberart in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She was one of 73
out of 769 artists from 35 countries whose work was chosen for this
exhibition. Her work has been featured in national publications such
as American Craft Magazine, Fiberarts Magazine and was included in
Fiberarts Design Book Six, published in 1999.
Ms. Bales is an experienced arts educator. She taught art in
public schools during the 1970’s, was a resident artist at Artpark
in Lewiston, New York in 1989 and has given numerous slides
presentations to college classes about her work and it’s influences.
In 1991 and again in 1999 she successfully completed large
sculptural installations for two private homes, one in Newport News,
Virginia and one in Iowa City, Iowa. Both were completed within
exacting time frames required by the clients.
In September of 2000 Ms. Bales was selected in a national
competition as design team artist for the Maryland Avenue Bicycle
Bridge Public Art Project in Phoenix, Arizona. This bridge will be
located at Maryland Avenue and Interstate Highway 17 in Phoenix and
will make an important east-west connection in the trail system for
Phoenix. The bridge will be highly visible and will complement the
series of landmark artist-designed bridges in Phoenix that receive
national attention. This project is commissioned by the City of
Phoenix, through the Phoenix Arts Commission’s Public Art Program.
The artist is collaborating with engineering firm of Cannon and
Associates for the design of the bridge superstructure, ramps,
lighting and landscaping. The project team is presently at the 30%
level of design development.
