From Women at Work

My interest in the arts began in early childhood. My mother is a visual artist. My father was a writer. Through a combination of example and encouragement, as well as by my own wish to make art, my love of visual and verbal expression evolved.

Participating in art exhibits, poetry workshops and college courses helped, too. So did living near museums, galleries and other cultural resources. By my late teens, I was drawing, painting, writing and sharing my work with others.

In the years that followed, I produced individual works on paper in a variety of media. Scattered among these are several small series, which combine watercolor, acrylic, pastel, ink and other materials.

In 1986, I received a Master of Science degree in Interdisciplinary Studies: Art & English. My Master’s Project, Women at Work, is a series of 12 paintings and 12 poems about 20th Century women engaged in various occupations. This series was the official starting point for my approach to painting in acrylic collage on canvas, sometimes accompanying the images with corresponding poetry.

In the last twelve years, I have created over a dozen series. Each series contains between 5-15 paintings. I use a variety of resources for compositional inspiration, including my own reference photos, images found in various publications, remembered experiences and imagination. Nearly all of these works are expressive and figurative.

In October of 1997, I began experimenting with digital art in a variety of software programs. I am excited about all of the new tools that allow me to paint in such a different way.

Regardless of the media, I am pleased to explore light, color, composition, and to focus on the feeling each image conveys. My work is a celebration of people, nature, spirit and life.
