| I have been asked to do a commissioned painting of a local historic hotel. The owner wants me to give her permissiom t make notecards from the image. In other words she wants me to give her copyright privileges. My normal fee for a commissioned home portrait is $175 - 200, I quoted her this price before I realized that she wanted copyright privileges for the notecards. If I let her do this she could have prints made up and sell them to her customers for years to come. That doesn't feel fair to me, although I know the publicity would be beneficial. I have no idea what the protocol is for this because I am relatively new to selling my work. Would it be reasonable to sell the copywrite to her for an additional fee? . . . $200, or more? I want to be fair to her too. Does anyone have any experience with this? Consulting a lawyer would be expensive and then I would have to charge her even more. Thanks in advance for any ideas. |
