As long as the pastel surface is not touched by anything it should be ok. That's why I said to leave space between pastel and matboard. You can do that by securing strips of foamboard between the pastel and the mat.

Thanks very much, Rita! I did get those cat pictures sent off for Christmas, and they made it in good shape...possibly by luck. It just happens that I'll be mailing another pastel, one of my "Ghost Car" pictures, to New York within the next few days, and I will certainly try your method of packing!
