Marjorie Young

I enjoy the physical spontaneity of working with all water-based media (ie. gouache, watercolours and acrylics), as they provide loose structural under-paintings, which I then shape with a series of washes, or overlays of inks, pastels, and/or paper collages. I feel that "flow" and "movement" are more readily achieved with mixed, water-based media, as they contribute to the serendipity of the final work.

My art is generally considered semi-abstract, marked by the use of bold colours, strong compositions and evoked emotions. Subject matter varies from florals, to landscapes and to portraits, particularly of children.

I consider the creating of art an alternative form of communication that transcends spoken or written language. Art can be used to evoke emotions, recall memories, and capture moments of time and space through the use of colour, light/dark shapes, textures and patterns.

In 1998, I was one of the jury-selected artists chosen for the Burnaby Art Gallery's gala opening at their new site, 1895 Willingdon Ave., Burnaby. For this year, I was jury-selected to participate in the Burnaby Arts Council and Burnaby Heights Merchants Associations' joint promotion and fund-raising efforts; a gala silent auction with artworks donated by 26 local B.C. artists on April 8th (6:30- 9:30 PM) at 6515 Bonsor Ave., Burnaby will raise funds for the Arts Council.

Marjorie Young lives in Vancouver, B. C., and teaches art to seniors and children in community centres and schools in the Lower Mainland. She is an Active Member of the Federation of Canadian Artists, and a member of CARFAC and ArtStarts in Schools As she usually works in various theme series, additional images are available for viewing by appointment. The 1998 series include: Days of Our Youth: Images of Children; As We Sow, So Shall We Reap: Fruit, Vegetable & Floral Studies; Watermargins: Land-and Sea-Scapes; Beyond Ourselves: Spiritual Journeys; Floating World: Asian-Inspired Images; Fur, Fin, & Feather: Creatures of the Earth and Sea.
