‘How Much is That Doggy in the Window?’

Mary Ann "How much is that doggy in the window?.... the one with the waggiley tail?"

Do you remember this old nursery rhyme?

On the average, most people spend $250.00 to $550.00 for their pedigree pals. All puppies are adorable! Whether you own a purebred or a mutt, they endear themselves to you so much so; that you wonder how you’d ever get along without them.

Raising a puppy has mixed blessings. Watching your furry friend’s comical antics and being witness to some of his horrendous chewing jobs gives way to both tears and laughter.

The most endearing trait dogs have is their unwavering loyalty to you, their master. It doesn’t matter what time you get home, or how long you’ve been gone, they are ecstatic to greet you. You may have been gone for only 30 minutes and the welcome is still the same.

Knowing what we know about our dogs and their devotion to us, can you understand how or why some people simply abandon their pets?

James Herriot, wrote in his book, ‘Dog Stories’, that he has found certain cruel people have been known to take their dogs to remote areas and to heave their trusting pets out of the car and screech off back to their homes. These cowards think that if they leave their dogs in the ‘country’ that they can fend for themselves or that some kindly person on acreage will take in their rejected pet.

The poor dog, who was totally dependent on his family for food and shelter, is now alone in the middle of nowhere.

Some dogs are killed on the roads, frantically racing back and forth looking for his masters car to return, thinking to himself that this is some obvious mistake or silly game...

Others simply starve to death. You can see loyal dogs, their little hearts broken, their paws raw from running back and forth, give up on life without their special family. They simply curl up and die... This is a crime.... The ‘lucky’ abandoned dogs are picked up and taken to the local animal shelter.

These are the dogs that are up for adoption.

Grant Whether you buy an expensive pedigree or adopt a Heinz 57, you will love that dog. $80.00 or $800.00... a puppy or an older dog will enrich your life.

If you can’t, for whatever reason, have a pet of your own...try being a volunteer at the Humane Society or the local animal shelter.

My friends, I beg you, when you decide to purchase a new pet, go to the Humane Society or your favorite animal shelter, you will be very surprised at what loving animals you will find....

And ...please...Ask the question...

How much is that doggy behind bars,

The one with the waggiley tail ...and the sad little eyes?
