The Kona Escape

"There is no better way
to experience Hawaii"

Photo Four years ago, the Barlows realized their dream by opening The Kona Escape, a guest house on the Big Island of Hawaii.

The Kona Coast is blessed with the sunniest skies of all the Islands, a place where Hawaiian Royalty chose to vacation. The Kona Escape is situated on the slope of Mount Hualalai, where spectacular views and a symphony of bird song stimulate the senses. It is set amidst the tranquillity of a christmas berry grove (pink peppercorns), surrounded by old lava rock walls dating back 400 years and bordered by two large macadamia nut farms. Miles from nowhere, yet within easy driving distance to everything. The Volcano National Park and Kealakekua Bay are to the south and the fabulous beaches of the Kohala to the north, with the picturesque town of Kailua, home of the Ironman Triathalon directly below us.

Photo Each of our private rooms offers it's own entrance, a queen size bed, four piece bathroom, TV and walk-in closet. High angled windows act as skylights, that let you count the stars at night and wake to the blue sky of the coming day.

Breakfast is served on the lanai of the main house, where you can plan your day while enjoying fresh baked muffins & bread, tropical fruits, fresh squeezed juices, homemade jams & jellies and of course our world famous Kona Coffee, picked and roasted to our specifications.

Find a quiet spot to read & relax, or grab some beach gear that is available for you and head for the sand & surf. At days end relax in our hot tub under the stars and savor the sensations of the day.

Photo The Big Island of Hawaii is the largest and most geographically diverse in this island archipelago. Glenn & Patricia can help you explore this tropical paradise through the eyes of a local. We can arrange expeditions to secluded beaches & valleys - spots you might never find without a guide.

PhotoWith years of combined hospitality experience, this mother and son team can make the difference to your stay. Patricia knows the island inside out and Glenn, returning to Kona after working the past 10 years in the wine industry (most recently as wine director for Umberto Menghi, west coast restaurateur, cookbook author and owner of the popular Villa Delia cooking school in Tuscany) has many fresh ideas to make The Kona Escape a must see. Glenn notes "to see the passion & detail Umberto has put into the Villa is an inspiration".

All rooms are non smoking, however the lanai is setup to enjoy both cigars & beverages.

The Big Island of Hawaii is one of the most diverse parcels of land in the world. With rain forests, an active volcano, waterfalls, tropical lagoons, alpine meadows, snowcapped mountain peaks, a glacial lake and beaches with white, black and even green sand to sink your toes into.

The crystal blue waters off Kona's coast is definitely a star attraction. There are glass bottom boat snorkeling tours and Kayak rentals to the famous Captain Cook monument, wind surfing at Anaehoomolu Bay or take a submarine adventure through a 25 acre natural coral reef.

Sports fishing in Kona is incredible, with calm seas, light winds and year-round summer like conditions. The big game fish roam just off shore because of a long, deep underwater slope.

There are many charter boats and tournaments available to you.

Take a Helicopter ride, a mountain bike tour, go horseback riding, hiking, hunting, play some tennis, star gaze atop Mauna Kea in some of the worlds highest observatories or even go for a ski, take a sunset dinner cruise, go whale watching, bird watching, visit a coffee plantation or a macadamia nut factory. What ever you wish we'll make it easy for you once you get here.

PhotoDon't forget the beach!

Hapuna was voted top beach in the world by Conde Naste Travel. It is over half a mile of golden sand with great body surfing and pavilions to picnic at.

To visit The Volcanoes National Park is an extraordinary experience. The landscape is dramatic, yet safe and accessible to view. Descending into the Thurston Lava Tube is unforgettable.

There are ten different golf courses to choose from on the Big Island. The golfing is fantastic. Let us book your tee times or arrange a golfing package. We will be adding more detailed golf information soon.
