We have special programs so as you float and explore this wilderness river, you will learn the history, wildlife, plant life and ecology.
Guests can ride aboard an oar boat where the guide navigates you safely down river. Or a Paddle boat where you join 5 to 7 other guests and a guide and paddle the raft through the many rapids yourselves. Or for the strong hearted, an inflatable kayak, the ultimate in whitewater excitement. At anytime during your trip you can decide which craft fits your mood.
We know how to make wilderness rafting & camping vacations both safe and comfortable. From the top-of-the-line Sierra Design tents, sleeping bags, self-inflating pads and pillows to the tables, chairs and hot showers, we have over looked nothing. Mackay provides everything but your clothes and toiletries. But, more important, Mackay provides the FUN!
Rafting the totally natural Middle Fork and Main Salmon Rivers through the pristine two-and-a-half million acre River of No Return Wilderness has been called by many the ultimate vacation. These are the most sought after wilderness expeditions in the United States. With Mackay, you can raft almost 180 miles of continuous, roadless and remote wilderness on the only completely free-flowing river system in the country. Enjoy the rejuvenating effects of this tranquil setting and the excitement of the whitewater experience, combined with the luxuries our Mackay guides provide in a wonderfully comfortable camping environment.
All our trips are designed to allow you to participate at a level that is comfortable for you. Under the watchful eye of our seasoned, professional guides, you may choose to ride in a large oar-powered raft, where the guide does all the rowing; a paddle raft, where you paddle under the watchful eye of the guide; or an inflatable kayak, where it's all up to you.
Our river trips range in length from 3 to 12 days, depending on how much of this vast wilderness you have time to see. During these trips we can personally schedule activities around each guest. We offer hiking, fishing, photography opportunities, bird and wildlife watching, sunbathing, or relaxing, just to name a few. No matter what your interests, you will find our guides are happy to help you. Personalization and attention to detail are just two of the many reasons Mackay vacations are memorable vacations.
Group sizes are 24 guests with 6 guides for a total of 30 in the group. On the Main Salmon we can accommodate larger group sizes. We also offer private charters on the Main Salmon for groups of 16 or more and on the Middle Fork for groups of 24. We maintain a guest to guide ratio of 4 to 1.
Our office is in Boise, Idaho. Guests coming to Idaho via commercial airlines will want to fly into Boise. United Airlines, Northwest Airlines, Southwest Airlines, Horizon and Delta all fly into Boise. Fir those wanting to fly American Airlines, you can fly to Salt Lake City and then take a shuttle flight to Boise.
Once in Boise, most of our guests take advantage of the Pre-Trip Lodging and Round Trip Air Charter Package. For guests driving to Idaho, they can come to Boise and do the lodging/air charter package or drive to either Stanley or Salmon for their trip. We provide ground transportation when the river is accessible by vehicle. Nevertheless, some trips will still require a one way flight to or from the river.
We can handle any dietary requirements you have. After you book a trip with us you will receive a "Trip Questionnaire." It will ask you to list any dietary concerns or requests. Then we prepare ahead to insure your concerns and requests are met.
