Niepoort is to vintage Port what Krug is to Champagne. They are both small houses in a world dominated by large competitors, but they are producing outstanding wines that very few can match. - James Suckling. Still owned and operated by the same family since its establishment at Vila Nova de Gaia, Portugal in 1842, Niepoort produces some of the world’s best Tawny Ports that shows their vibrant freshness and at the same time their age.

Tawny Port Colheita 1983

As the Wine Spectator said in a recent review of Tawny Ports:Absolutely fabulous. One of the best tawnies we’ve had in a long time. An array of floral, dried fruit and nut character on the nose and palate. Medium in body and extremely smooth. Great balance. Mega-long finish. 95 points!

Tawny Port Colheita 1976

Finished a very close second to the 1983 Colheita in the Wine Spectator Tawny taste off: Extremely intense flavored tawny showing plum honey and toffee character. Very sweet and packed with fruit. Rich, full bodied, complex structure and great finish.

Serving suggestions for all the above: a soft chair, the warmth of a nice fire, a good book, a substantial glass, and a big fat expensive cigar!

Vintage Port 1994

The grapes for Niepoort Vintage Ports come from four vineyards around Pinhào, at the very heart of the best vineyard area. Without exception, the vineyards are over 80 years old and the yields are extremely low at around 5 to 6 hectolitres per hectare.

Due to cool temperatures during fermentation, skin contact was unusually long (7 days). The wine was made in the usual way, foot trodden in largares with the grapes on their stems.

As usual with Niepoort Vintage Port, a proportion of the wine was aged in big wooden tonéis and a proportion aged in Pipes, after which it was bottled without filtration. Today, Niepoort is probably the only house making and ageing Port this way.I believe that ageing the wine in pipes and tonéis produces harmonious, elegant wines of extraordinary longevity , commented Dirk van der Niepoort.

Quinta do Passadouro Vintage Port 1994

The 1994 Quinta do Passadouro comes from around 15 hectares of vines that are between 10 years old (5%), 35 years old (70%), and 65 years old (25%). The total 1994 production bottled was 1800 cases.

The harvest started at the end of the third week of September, but due to cool temperatures during fermentation, skin contact was unusually long. Maturation was perfect with no rot and the yields were very low at less than 9 hectolitres per hectare.

The wine in the traditional way, foot trodden in largares with the grapes on their stems; and, was bottled without filtration.

In my view, 1994 is a great year which combines the good aspects of the 1991 (austere style with a good grip and great concentration) and the 1992 vintages (fairly big rich round wines, with good fruit), commented Dirk van der Niepoort.
